The influence of AiREAS on polluting behavior?

Four years in a row AiREAS has measured and communicated openly about the air pollution related to fireworks in Eindhoven during the newyear’s eve celebrations of the city’s citizens. Various sources comment about the influence that this seems to have on our behavior, the air pollution, the apparent reduction of the intensity of fireworks and the related pollution patterns. This would surely be positive and a reassurance of the effort we put in this as a healthy city multidisciplinary cooperative in which many participate to improve the environmental quality within our living space.

This year’s air pollution can be observed through the timelaps created by our partner Scapeler on YouTube and reduced to GIFs for easy and fast observation.

Ultrafinedust: AiREAS in Eindhoven is probably the only place in the world where pollution is measured in near real time at the level of nano-particles. One of the four installed UFP systems was defect (shows hardly any motion in the video). The other three were functioning properly. In the city center UFP peaks were measured of up to 245.000 parts per cm3! In the suburbs the peaks were as high as 100.000 parts per cm3. For reference we use levels below 6000 parts per cm3 as “good”, even though the knowledge of ultrafine particles in relation to human health is still very limited. UFP is suspected to be a major health hazard, much bigger still than the larger pollutants such as PM 2.5 and 10.

Ultrafinedust peaks measured in Eindhoven during Newyear’s Eve

Finedust: On about 30 locations throughout town we measure finedust (PM1, 2.5 and 10) in near real time (every 10 minutes). The timelaps shows a much slower start of the firework activities than other yeaes and a rapid elimination of the peaks. The weather was foggy with little wind. One would expect a longer delay for the reduction but the elimination of pollution registered was relatively fast compared to other years.

We notice a gradual change in behavior. Just compare the timelaps of this year and two years ago.

Eindhoven switches to 100% Electric public transport

Today the public transport system of Eindhoven switched its 43 bussen entire to electric! With this Eindhoven becomes the first European city to do this 100%. 

The Hermes bus company had to restructure its functioning and train its 550 chauffers. Driving electric requires totally new routines. Bussen can drive 3 hours between charging but a watch out is needed to assure that drivers don’t start their routes with improperly charged vehicles and return in time before running out of energy.
At AiREAS we hope to detect improvements in air quality and noises levels in town. Different theories go around about electric vehicles and pollution. What exactly the reality will show remains a question mark but with a fine maze measurement network in place we sure hope to be able to get some new insights over time that contribute to our healthy city objectives.

Ozone behavior remains a riddle

This morning we were surpised with an unexpected peak of Ozone in the city center and our Strijp city quarter. In general, across town the O3 levels were high. But why?



This Ozone behavior we expect in summer when the power of the sunlight causes ozone to develop out of other pollution. But in a cold winter morning? What could be the cause? Fine dust remained low.

Sustainocracy, the new democracy

My STIR research foundation, together  with AiREAS (air quality and healthy city) and the University of Technology of Eindhoven, apply participative learning on a group of 25 international students. We are looking for ways to use technology and care within the challenges of Sustainocracy. We introduce a whole new way of thinking that can eventually transform the entire healthcare chain.

Symposium Clean Air on December 21st during 3FM Serious Request

This year’s theme of the popular radio challenge 3FM Serious Request is to pay attention to the 900.000 death among children between 0 and 5 years of age because of lung infection. It is one of the most serious causes of death among this group of people, more still than hiv, malaria, aids or measles. The location this year is the city of Breda.

Together with the local Avans University AiREAS already conducts participative learning programs with international students to help develop their awareness and active knowledge development on air quality and health as a core value through real measurement, interpretation and communication programs. Avans organizes this Symposium on Clean Air and invited AiREAS to also speak about the new smart ways to develop cities by using air quality and health as triggers for local innovative initiatives and developing the direct and productive involvement of policy makers, citizens, innovative entrepreneurs and educators such as Avans. The symposium ‘Clean Air’ is one of the central activities which will be held as part of the Avans Glazen School. During the symposium various speakers will highlight different aspects of clean and healthy air. For example, odor pollution and ‘electronic noses’, the benefits of strawberry plans to improve air quality and the dilemma of economic progress versus livability will be presented and discussed. The symposium is organised by the Environmental Science department of the Avans University of Applied Sciences.

The entry fee for the symposium is 10 euros (5 euros for students), which will be donated to Serious Request.
The symposium does not include a lunch. Lunch is available in the Glass School. Revenues for this lunch are also entirely donated to Serious Request.

The city of Breda has partnered with AiREAS as second city in Brabant already for over 1 year to develop health and healthy air as part of their policy and joined development program. We look specificially at heat stress as main trigger for innovation (as we already do a fine maze human exposure measurement program in partner city Eindhoven).using 3 AiREAS measurement stations in town.
